For endurance purposes, it really does seem that if an athlete could delay the onset of fatigue by 30-60 minutes then they really should do that. I don't see how there could possibly be a counter argument to this. Well done.

"bacon, its the sole reason why you're not a vegetarian." All joking aside this was rather well done. There are more and more athletes on a professional level that are moving to this type of diet and are experiencing success with it. Rather well done.

This is actually my favorite subject chosen by anyone, in fact, I'm sorta envious that I didn't select it myself. I loved what you did about the mental pressures for athletes to have the "idea" physical image, and how obese people will often times go to extreme lengths to achieve their overall weight loss goals, even if those means are worse for their bodies than being obese.

I too thought about the concerns with the reduced levels of CHO.  This seems to be a good diet for overall health and to battle (in some cases reverse) CVD.  However, in elite level athletes I would definitely suggest adding in some CHO as to not reach an energy deficit.  Keep in mind that an overwhelming amount of the research out there supports this diet for the Diabetic and CVD population.  There area that needs much more research is the athletic populations.  I think these future studies could shed light on the CHO deficiency and whether or not this diet alone is practical for high level competitors.  Thanks for the comments and glad you liked it!!!

Hydration is well-known to be vital to athletic performance and more importantly to sustained health.  Muscle cramps are one of the first signs of hydration that is noticable to most indiviudals.  However, by this time it is usually too late to hydrate themselve in a timely matter to counter the cramps and continue their workout or competition.  Hydration by way of water is crucial, although when exercising at a moderate to high intensity level it is more beneficial to consume a carbohydrate-containing supplement.  This hydrates the body as well as provides the body with glycogen to replenish the glucose stores within the body.  I think you did a very good job of highlighting the key topics of hydration in your powerpoint.

Caffeine in my opinion is a safe, when used in moderation, and natural nutrient.  I personally drink coffee a few times a week when I have to work early.  I find it to enhance my work and make me more alert.  I agree with you that it can become addicting because I know people that can not funtion without coffee and energy drinks.  Since caffeine acts as a stimulant, it would make sense that it could help enhance the quality and duration of an exercise session if used in moderation and appropriately.

Jessica,
Eating disorders are a very real and not talked about topic.  Eating disorders in female athletes is more common then most people could comprehend.  Many sports for woman call for them to look a certain way (dance, figure skating, body building), which leads to many women partaking in malnutrition and develop life long eating disorders.  Pressure is felt from many different associated parties as you mentioned in your powerpoint.  Were you able to find any information on woman that are in sports that it is necessary to bulk up?  Were they asked to consume more food and supplements then they would normally eat or even like to?

Good presentation. I actually found with much of my research on the post-concussion athlete, nitric oxide can be a potentially lethal substance with brain injuries. This was honestly news to me, but when examining the pathophysiology and the excitotoxicities, I found nitric oxide to be a bad thing. While I do not disagree with it as a supplement, my question would be at what point would it no longer cause a detrimental effect on a patient with a closed head injury or mild traumatic brain injury. Well done on the presentation.

Great presentation. I too find the low CHO portion of the lifestyle to be somewhat concerning for athletics; especially because so many athletes suffer from hypoglycemic episodes. At the same time, would that be a compromise for the cardiovascular benefits? Hypertension in athletes, as with the rest of America, seems to be on the rise. It would be interesting to see how a power athlete could do on this diet/lifestyle.

It is well researched that when performing strenuous exercise training there is an induced oxidative stress to the body that when prolonged can overwhelm the antioxidant defenses. Disturbances of such can cause toxic effects that can damage all components of the cell within the body including proteins, lipids, and DNA. With the increasing interest in antioxidants having the potential to reduce such oxidative stresses the sport science world has taken an interest in this phenomenon and athletes have taken to strategies to consume them. In this research project I intend on presenting various reviews and evaluations that have occurred thus far about the effects of consuming antioxidants as an attempt to aid in the athlete that under goes oxidative stress. Studies have shown mixed reviews on human performance but there is evidence that show decreases in exercise-induced damages. There is still much to be learned about intake of antioxidants and how athletes can use its full potential.

This is really interesting, especially the bit about families. I can say having been a part of a D1 track team, a team can have a huge influence on a female's food consumption. We regularly ate together, and worked out together, so when you're trying to be the best athlete you can be, it's easy to start competing with food as well as the sport. It can be scary business.

My whole "pro paleo" for athletes is based on the Calories that Count idea; however, I'm with Jasmine in the thinking of why no legumes? Were you able to find anything on this, Tyler? They're plant-based and totally natural. I don't get it.

Loved the topic and presentation. As you know this is such a hot topic and this kind of information would be key to present to coaches or athlete before a season begins. I think this kind of information should be presented at any athlete in-service. It could also be made into a pamphlet for high school and college athletic trainers to hand out to their athlete after they experience a concussion. Great job, Brett.

I don't think that weight loss supplements are bad, it is just important to be educated on what you are taking limit possible side effects. Most people do not consider these things and if it is on the shelf it must be safe. Weight loss supplementation, in conjunction with a well planned diet and exercise plan can help to illicit greater weight loss for some individuals. Due to the fact that obesity is an epidemic there is a great need to help these obese individuals lose weight. Not all things are bad and perhaps further research in the future will be able to shed more light on weight loss supplements.

I don't think so in this case because there are so many different supplements and ingredients used for weight loss supplementation. And actually I did scale it down because there are a bunch of other things that have been used. I tried to show the most common ingredients that are being used. I know it seems long but in an actual presentation it would go by pretty quick.

I am very interested in your topic (surprise, since I am the veggie girl?) because I have a strong belief in living similar to how our ancestors lived. This makes sense to me because whether high-maintenance people like it or not, humans were created to live amongst and like animals. Heck, humans ARE animals. Several studies have shown how similar our species are to apes, cats, and even pigs.
The Paleo diet works for some people and others not. In my case, I find that my body responds very well to not eating meat and little fat. A good friend of mine, however, is on the Paleo diet, she is over weight and wants to lose; she lost 15 pounds in 40 days without exercise.

Your powerpoint is great and provides informative and useful information.
Something that got my critical thinking gears working are slides 9 and 10. These inform how the tribes would exercise while trying to get food - that is definitely not a modern day thing! It amazes me how far humans have come from once being lean hunting machines having to forge for their own food to the present-day house wife where her "exercise" is walking to the car, throughout  the grocery store, and back to get food. Slide 10 notes how the hunters are low in CHO but high in triglycerides. This makes since because meat is higher in fat than CHO. Even though CHO are the body's main source of energy, fat is also utilized when the duration of exercise is long. So this raises two questions:

1. is it possible that the caveman's body once preferred fat over CHO due to the lack in CHO availability? It IS a belief that civilizations and settlements were created due to the fact that grains and crops in general must be watched over and eventually harvested.
2. is the Paleo diet really a good diet to be on today since the majority of the people partaking in it not spending long hours every day forging for food? My friend for example,  she does not exercise. Her CHO intake has significantly decreased since she stopped eating so many grain products. yes she is losing weight because she cut all of that junk food her body has been used to processing her entire life BUT over a long period of time will this diet benefit her?

Sorry if your brain just exploded. When I get on an interesting topic I tend to go on and on and on.. shoot me.

Great work and the best of luck to you if you are on this diet.

Nice PowerPoint and review.
I am always telling my friends and family (mainly female) that their diet pills do not do a darn thing for their bodies except harm. I also had a cousin recently tell me that he would vomit every time after taking his pre-workout supplement.
I could go into a long discussion about this, the pros and cons to taking diet pills and whatnot, BUT I will spare you your time.
Good work. The light is close.

A very hot topic right now considering that energy drinks are all the rage now-a-days! Many athletes believe they need that "rush" of caffeine in order to perform and in some instances it can help, but eventually and rather quickly that rush wears off and the athelte is back to square one or sometimes even worse. There should be education (such as your research) to help not only athletes, but the general population look at the serious pros and cons of consuming commercial energy drinks! Very nice job Morgan!!

 Chelsea,
I think your presentation was very well put-together and keeps the reader's/audience's interest. I think a vegetarian diet was a great choice for research. I personally feel like there is a lot on contradiction in terms of a vegetarian diet for an athlete. Most of what I hear is that they should'nt do it because they would have too many deficiencies; but with your presentation you showed that it is possible for an athlete to be healthy and perform at their maximum ability as well. very nice job.

Very well put-together powerpoint. I think you covered a lot of important aspects of the issue among college students. It is important to make the issue known to public so that others know what symptoms to look out for because unfortunately, eating disorders are more common than people may realize and its important to seek help for those experiencing it.

As an energy drink consumer, I always enjoy reading information about their potential positive and negative effects. I've read a couple, but think there should be more studies that measure performance differences in energy drinks that are low sugar/low carb and those that are high sugar/high carb. From experience, I think increased alertness is a primary benefit like your research showed. Good job on summarizing the studies dedicated to energy drinks.

I LOVE the pictures you chose to incorporate in your presentation. You did a good job of identifying a serious issue, and providing ways to acknowledge the problem. I did research on nutrition in the military, and was surprised to find that the majority of soldiers attempting to lose weight do so by skipping meals. Eating disorders, especially anorexia, seem to exist everywhere. Education and awareness is definitely important.
